If you love live performances, Pennsylvania has theater, musicals, dance, orchestras, and more to keep you entertained. Even better, many of these events can be enjoyed at beautifully preserved, historic theaters that are located all around the state. Here are just a few of our favorites. Heinz Hall is the home of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Completed in 1927, the hall was originally a movie theater known as the Loew’s Penn Theater. The building was remodeled in the 1970s but has retained its amazing acoustics and much of its original architecture. The Civic Theatre of Allentown was built as a movie theater in 1928 and still showcases a variety of films and theatrical productions throughout the year. The Beaux Arts Mishler Theatre in Altoona was completed in 1907. Originally built to show silent movies, the theater now showcases local performances as well as internationally recognized performances and artists. The Strand Theater, now part of the recently renamed Appel Performing Arts Center in York, is a five-building complex that includes two historic theaters. The Center showcases both local and national talent through live music, theater productions, comedy, and much more. Erie’s Warner Theatre is an Art Deco and French Renaissance-styled theater built for the Warner Bros. In 1931. Originally a movie theater, it is now home to the Lake Erie Ballet and the Erie Philharmonic. Built during the 1920s as a family-owned vaudeville movie house, The Palace Theatre in Greensburg is now home to more than 100 cultural and entertainment events each year presented by the Westmoreland Cultural Trust. Chocolate magnate Milton Hershey originally built the Hershey Theatre to create entertainment options for his employees. Today, the theater features touring Broadway shows, dance, and classical concerts. The Majestic Theater in Gettysburg was billed as the grandest small-town theater in America. Today, it is owned by Gettysburg College and shows movies, theater productions, and touring shows. Last but not least, the Academy of Music in Philadelphia is the oldest opera house in the United States that is still used for that purpose. Built in the 1850s, the theater is known as the “Grand Old Lady of Locust Street.” It is now home to Opera Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Ballet.
