Three cultural institutions celebrate anniversaries in 2021, while two interactive museums provide family-friendly fun. THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION The nation’s ultimate arts and culture organization marks its 175th anniversary by peering deep into our potential FUTURES. The program will begin as a virtual guide before the reopening of the Arts + Industries Building, where a physical exhibition will showcase both cutting-edge technology and historic objects. THE JOHN F. KENNEDY CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS A living, breathing memorial dedicated to the 35th president, the city’s most revered performance space turns 50 in 2021. The Center hopes to host free daily concerts on the Millennium Stage and showcase its interactive campus, The REACH. THE PHILLIPS COLLECTION America’s first museum of modern art reaches its centennial in 2021 and marks the occasion with new exhibits and programming. Savor a collection that includes pieces by Jacob Lawrence, Georgia O’Keeffe and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. THE NATIONAL BUILDING MUSEUM This spectacular ode to architecture will offer the breathtaking Great Hall, exciting exhibitions and PLAY WORK BUILD, a hands-on design experience for kids, once it reopens. THE NATIONAL CHILDREN’S MUSEUM After opening in early 2020, this STEAM-focused museum re-engages the curiosity and creativity of the entire family upon reopening in 2021.
