Where to Warm Up After Winter Fun

If you thrive in the cold and delight in a snowy forecast, you might be a chionophile — a lover of winter. Luckily, Pennsylvania is a snow-lover’s playground, packed with chilly thrills and cozy charm. Whether you're carving down a mountain, lacing up skates, or quietly exploring frosted forests, there's no shortage of ways to embrace the season.

On (and Off) the Slopes

For adrenaline-seekers, Pennsylvania’s ski resorts deliver. At Blue Mountain Ski Resort in Palmerton, you’ll find the state’s highest vertical drop (1,082 feet) and the largest snow tubing park in the country. With 40 trails suited for all levels and powerful snowmaking, conditions stay primed all season. After a day on the slopes, head to Slopeside Pub & Grill for elevated après-ski fare and cocktails beside a glowing indoor-outdoor fireplace, all with stunning mountain views.

In the Laurel Highlands, Seven Springs Mountain Resort offers a wealth of snow-covered slopes, progressive terrain parks, and off-the-slopes fun. Refuel with hearty eats at the Bavarian Lounge, test your aim at Foggy Goggle Axe House, or unwind with a massage at Trillium Spa. Guests can also soak in hot tubs to soothe sore muscles.

Roundtop Mountain Resort in Lewisberry keeps the fun going after dark with night skiing and snowboarding from 3 p.m. to close. Warm up between runs with comfort food and drinks at Fireside Lounge, or opt for snow tubing with an optional unlimited hot cocoa pass at Mountainview Lodge — complete with marshmallows and sweeping views.

Cross-Country Trails & Cozy Stays

Prefer a slower pace? Stop by the park offices at Kooser and Laurel Hill state parks in Somerset or Ohiopyle State Park in Ohiopyle to rent snowshoes, free of charge — available on a first-come first-served basis. In Cooksburg, step into a snow-dusted postcard as you glide beneath the towering white pines and hemlocks of the “Forest Cathedral,” a National Natural Landmark in Cook Forest State Park. Rent your skis from the on-site Cooksburg Dry Goods Gift Shoppe, then retreat to a cozy cabin with a wood-burning fireplace at nearby Fair Winds in the Forest Cabins & Lodge.

At Promised Land State Park in Greentown, snowmobile along 23 miles of designated trails on state park and Delaware State Forest lands, or cross-country ski or snowshoe on the Bruce Lake Natural Area and Conservation Island trails. Nearby, The Rex microhotel offers private, contemporary cabins for the perfect winter retreat.

Or stay where you play at The Lodge at Glendorn in Bradford, where complimentary snowshoes and skis open up miles of quiet trails just beyond your door. After your wintry wander, unwind by the fireplace in your private cabin, or melt into a steam shower and hot stone massage at The Forest Spa.

Winter in the City

Urban adventures await too. In Philadelphia, the Rothman Orthopaedics Ice Rink at Dilworth Park invites visitors to skate beneath City Hall’s grandeur. Afterward, sip something warm in the cozy chalet and explore the twinkling Wintergarden, dotted with whimsical reindeer topiaries.

In Pittsburgh, the UPMC Rink at PPG Place dazzles with skyscrapers as a dramatic backdrop. Just steps away, grab a bite at Primanti Bros. in Market Square, a city staple since 1933 known for its stacked “Almost Famous” sandwiches.
