Enjoy the Black Hills and Badlands any time of year
No matter the time of year, you can experience the most out of your trip to the region.
The Black Hills and Badlands is home to many attractions, lodging, and dining destinations, welcoming visitors throughout the year. Take advantage of seasonal opportunities with fewer crowds in the slower season.

UNFORGETTABLE SEASONAL VIEWS
The four seasons all deliver a uniquely stunning backdrop of the Black Hills and Badlands, making photography ideal at any moment. Capture the sunny skies mirrored in lakes, the sparkling powder-filled slopes of winter, the vibrant coloring of the fall foliage framing natural waterfalls, or the bursts of springtime colors.
SEASONAL DRIVES
Autumn is an ideal time to view the golden hues, vibrant oranges, and yellows that make leaf-peeping a favorite pastime. In the fall, wildlife roam more freely, offering sightings of the area’s most popular residents right outside the car window.

FROSTY FROLICS
Adventure doesn’t stop once snow hits the ground. Many hiking and biking trails are open year-round and transition into snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and fat biking during winter months. More than 60 miles of trails are dedicated to cross-country skiing throughout the Black Hills.
Terry Peak Ski Area takes winter sports to a new level with skiing and snowboarding runs overlooking expansive, panoramic landscapes. More than 350 miles of groomed snowmobile trails sprawl throughout the Black Hills National Forest and are open mid-December to mid-March. Anglers can drill into frozen lakes or wade in chilly streams for trout.
SPRINGING AHEAD
The Black Hills and Badlands come to life in the spring. From blossoming prairie flowers to budding leaves, the landscape is immersed in a burst of color and fresh aromas.
Spring also welcomes new baby wildlife to the region, which is a must-see when visiting national and state parks. Baby bison, or as the locals call them, “cinnamons”, are fan favorites. Watch them take their first wobbly steps and soon frolic across the prairies.
