THE GIST OF IT: Algiers is a short, scenic ferry ride away from the French Quarter, with tucked-away bars, restaurants and a new riverfront bike path. HOW TO GET THERE: Most visitors take the Algiers/Canal Street Ferry ($2; cash only and with exact change), which departs every half hour on weekdays and every 15 minutes on weekends. The ferry terminal is at the end of Canal Street, near the Mississippi River. Once there, Algiers is easily navigable by foot. If you prefer to drive, take the Riverbound Expressway across the river via the Crescent City Connection Bridge, head north on Landry Avenue and turn left on Opelousas Avenue.
