A tuneful revolution launched in 1877 when Thomas Edison unveiled the phonograph—making music recordable and shareable—at his West Orange laboratory in 1877. By the 1930s, Newark emerged as an incubator for jazz clubs and recording studios, with Atlantic City showcasing evolving musical styles. Decades later, New Brunswick’s “basement scene” spawned a recording label boom, while crowds in Asbury Park rocked out at legendary (and still lively) music venues like Stone Pony, House of Independents, Convention Hall and more.

For an archetypal standing-room experience, head to Starland Ballroom in Sayreville for a lineup of local and visiting artists. For supersized venues with indoor-outdoor concert seating, catch leading bands and musicians at Camden’s waterfront Freedom Mortgage Pavilion or PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel. And in Newark, the Prudential Center box office brings in big-name acts for arena-size performances, while the New Jersey Performing Arts Center offers incredible live acoustics in a breathtaking theater.
