CANOEING REMAINS THE TRADITIONAL MODE OF RIVER TRAVEL IN ALASKA.

qayaq, aka kayak
Before motorized boats, Sugpiaq people traveled by qayaq to harvest from the ocean, and even greater distances for trade and supplies. These swift, lightweight crafts were custom-built from a wooden frame, upturned bow, and animal skins such as seal, which cut through rough waters.
