Did you know that Pennsylvania is one of the top maple syrup producers in the country? During maple tapping season (from late winter to early spring), visitors can see how farmers produce this tasty treat and sample unique products produced with it. Maple syrup comes from the sap of sugar maple trees found throughout Pennsylvania. Trees are tapped in winter and can produce sap until early spring. Sap is collected in metal buckets hung from a tap, filtered to remove the sediments, and boiled to evaporate the water and increase the sugar content of the syrup. Once the syrup reaches between 66 and 68 percent sugar, it is ready to be filtered again and then bottled. It takes more than 40 gallons of sap to produce a single gallon of syrup. Brantview Farms in Shanksville offers the chance to see how maple syrup is produced in the 21st century. You can also see what life was like at a 19th-century sugar camp with a visit to the nearby Somerset Historical Center in Somerset. This recreated camp offers a glimpse back into Pennsylvania’s history, as well as seasonal demonstrations. In the northwestern Pennsylvania community of Edinboro, the Hurry Hill Maple Farm Museum not only offers a chance to see maple syrup being made, but also features a fantastic opportunity to learn the art and science of making delicious maple syrup. With so much maple syrup around the state, producers have gotten creative with the products they make using this sweet treat.
