Dear Friends,
Chesapeake Bay is a national treasure, and our state’s greatest and most important natural asset. Its splendor and beauty are obvious to anyone who visits, but the Bay’s historical significance to our state and our country runs far deeper.
During the War of 1812, the Chesapeake Bay was front-and-center as the young United States faced the gravest threat yet to its hardwon independence. After months of fighting along the Bay, the British army burned down the White House before setting its sights north. They expected to overcome Baltimore, but at Fort McHenry they met Marylanders whose resolve and ultimate victory inspired Francis Scott Key to write our National Anthem. It was on the Bay’s shores that Marylanders made their greatest stand, preserving the country we love today.

SAY CAN YOU SEE: America’s Story—Traveling the Star -Spangled Banner National Historic Trail follows the War of 1812, the United States’ second war for independence.
Follow this guide to Bladensburg Waterfront Park and picture the courageous stand of Commodore Joshua Barney at The Bladensburg Races. Launch a kayak and paddle along the Anacostia River. Journey to the Eastern Shore to the site of the Battle of Caulk’s Field. After more than 200 years, the battlefield remains much as it was that day. Then head to nearby Rock Hall, a waterman’s paradise with some of the best seafood in the state. Cast a fishing line from the jetty at nearby North Point State Park. Head to Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum in Southern Maryland. The waters adjacent to this park were the site of the largest naval battle in the War of 1812, and in Maryland’s history. Finally, go visit Baltimore and its famous Inner Harbor, and look out from the ramparts of Fort McHenry where the Star- Spangled Banner still waves.
