IN THE PARK TO PARK REGION 1.MEET THE FAMOUS BLACK-FOOTED FERRET Meeteetse The Made in Meeteetse: the Black-Footed Ferret exhibit at the Meeteetse Museum showcases the town’s unique connection to one of North America’s most endangered animals. Meeteetse’s two other free museums — The Charles Belden Western Photography Museum and The Bank Museum — are also worth a visit. 2.SPOT ELK ON THE MUDDY MOUNTAIN INTERPRETIVE NATURE TRAIL Casper Meander along the family-friendly two-mile- long trail through forest, sagebrush and grasslands at Muddy Mountain Environmental Education Area south of Casper for the chance to spot elk, antelope, deer and blue grouse. Dispersed camping is also available at the 1,260-acre natural area. 3.CHECK OUT THE ART OF MASTERS Casper Take advantage of free admission to the Nicolaysen Art Museum on Sundays to check out their impressive collection of paintings, sculptures, drawings and photographs. From masterpieces by Salvador Dali and Henri Matisse to works by local Wyoming artists, the “Nic” has no shortage of terrific exhibits. VISIT JACKALOPE SQUARE Douglas According to legend, the jackalope was born in Douglas when two brothers mounted a jackrabbit’s body with deer antlers at their taxidermy shop. Pose with the eight-foot statue of the mystical creature at Jackalope Square, then stop at the Douglas Railroad Interpretive Center nearby. SEE ANCIENT ROCK CLIFFS Between Shoshoni and Thermopolis The Wind River Canyon Scenic Byway stretches for about 34 miles between Shoshoni and Thermopolis, offering lovely glimpses of Wind River Canyon’s 2,500-foot, pink-hued rock walls that date back to the Precambrian period, sprawling Boysen Reservoir and bighorn sheep. OFF ROAD TO AN OLD BOOMTOWN Near Meeteetse About 34 miles from Meeteetse, the ghost town of Kirwin was once occupied by about 200 miners and their families and had nearly 40 buildings, including a hotel, post office and boarding houses. The town sprung to life in the mid-1880s when gold was discovered, but was abandoned in 1907. If you have a four-wheel-drive vehicle, check out the remains of a mine and several buildings.
