5 Ways to Hit the Trails

1 HIKING
Explore the Chuska Mountains within Navajo Nation land on the Arizona and New Mexico border with Hołdzilei Hiking Strong, a Diné-woman-led company offering day hikes ranging from 4 to 12 miles. For ADA-accessible trails, take in dramatic views of the Hermit Road section of the paved Greenway Trail in Grand Canyon National Park, explore the archaeological sites along the half-mile paved Homolovi II Trail at Homolovi State Park in Winslow, or enjoy trails circling three lagoons at Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood.
2 HORSEBACK RIDING
Saddle up and ride through towering saguaros at MacDonald’s Ranch in Scottsdale. Book the 1.5-hour sunset ride tour to see the desert skies awash in color. For scenic rides amid canyons and ponderosa pine forests, opt for the two-hour trail ride with Historic Hitchin’ Post Stables in Flagstaff.
3 BIKING
Exotic scenery mixed with fast and flowing sections make Kingman’s Monolith Gardens Loop an ideal route for mountain bikers ready for some ridgeline climbs and downhill slickrockstyle riding. For a longer ride, hop on at one of the access points of the 800-mile Arizona National Scenic Trail, which traverses deserts, deep canyons, rugged mountain ranges and fragrant pine forests. Or explore the newly opened Bean Peaks Gravity Flow Trails in Prescott, with more than 16 miles of advanced, intermediate and beginner trails. Most of the trails are one-way and mountain bike only, and Phase 3 of trail construction is slated to add another 4.7 miles of trail by spring of 2026.
4 OFF-ROADING
Arizona offers nearly 40,000 miles of off-highway trails throughout the state. Alto Pit OHV Area in Prescott sits at the base of Granite Mountain and includes 20 miles of motorized trails, a campground and designated children’s area.
