The island was an artistic retreat visited by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Harriet Beech Stowe before becoming a military base. Constructed during the 1890s, Fort McKinley was part of the country’s coastal defense system tasked with protecting Portland’s harbor and Casco Bay. After years of decay, following its decommission, the island became a private community with many of the buildings restored and converted into residences. The Inn, housed in Fort McKinley’s former barracks, overlooks the former parade grounds and recently reopened after an extensive restoration of the historic building. Many beaches and trails are available to guests. Cars are not permitted on the island. Transportation around the island is on golf carts or bicyles. LOCATION Open seasonally, The Inn is on Maine’s Great Diamond Island in Casco Bay and is a short 30-minute ferry ride from Portland.
