GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, ARIZONA PROPERTY EST. 1922 Phantom Ranch is tucked beside Bright Angel Creek on the north side of the Colorado River and is the only lodging facility below the canyon rim. The Fred Harvey Company became the concessioner for the camp in 1922 and hired the American architect Mary E.J. Colter to design permanent lodging. Open year-round, it is only accessible by mule, by foot, or by rafting the Colorado River. The accommodations at Phantom Ranch consist of dormitory spaces and cabins. The Phantom Ranch Canteen provides hearty breakfasts, sack lunches, and dinners. Advance reservations are required. Phantom Ranch holds the distinction of being one of the only two places left in America, whose mail is still delivered by mule. ORIGINAL HOTEL CHARMING SERVICE TRADITIONAL DÉCOR NATIONAL PARK RUSTIC AMENITIES Overnight accommodations consist of dormitories separated for women and men with 10 bunk beds, a shower and restroom, and 11 unique, rustic cabins. Cabins are furnished with a set of bunk beds and shower house. A National Park Service campground is also located nearby and requires a back country permit. Amenities include bedding, cold water sink, liquid soap, and towels. Duffle service, ranger station, emergency medical facilities, and hiking trails. DINING Phantom Ranch Canteen offers hearty breakfasts, sack lunches, and dinners. Selection includes choice of hiker’s stew, vegetarian chili, or steak. Beverages and sundries are also available. Meals must be reserved well in advance of a descent into the canyon. There are specific seating times for breakfast and dinner. Steak dinners are served during the early seating, and hiker’s stew and vegetarian chili dinners are served at the late seating. LOCATION Approximately 1 vertical mile below the South Rim, at an elevation of 2,400 feet. Only accessible by foot (10 miles via Bright Angel Trail and 7.5 miles via the South Kaibab Trail), mule, or rafting the Colorado River. Overnight mule rides depart from the Bright Angel Lodge.
